LESLIE: Now we’re going to go to Florida where Jeff is looking for a vent hood.
Jeff, how can we help?
JEFF: Alright, last year – I live in Pensacola, of course, and we had some hurricane damage and actually tore off the cap to the Vent-a-Hood.
TOM: OK.
JEFF: And got debris down in it and destroyed the Vent-a-Hood. So I’ve been wondering is there any new technology out there that prevents such a thing and I am wanting to get a new Vent-a-Hood – you know, that worked better than the old one – so I was just wondering if you guys had any idea if there’s anything new out there.
TOM: Well boy, Jeff, there’s a whole range of quality when it comes to vent hoods.
LESLIE: Are you trying to be funny, Tom?
TOM: (laughs) No. I was funny? I didn’t know. How about that? (Leslie chuckles) That’s the story of my life. You know, there is a big range. You can get the very inexpensive ones from the recirculators up to the super-high-efficiency ones that are great for like big, professional cooking stoves like Viking ranges and stuff like that.
What you want to look for is – do you have a very large stove, Jeff? Is there anything special about your stove?
JEFF: No, it’s a normal-size range.
TOM: Well, what I think is new is that there are a lot of new designs out there.
Leslie, you’ve probably seen a lot in your travels.
LESLIE: Well, there’s a great website and you’d be surprised at how different each company and each manufacturer can make their vent hoods. Some are so modern and clean and some look like they’re built into your cabinetry and some are these handcrafted copper pieces that really – you know, depending on what the style of your kitchen is, you can go anywhere with these. And there’s a great website – it’s called RangeHoods.com – and they have all of the high-quality manufacturers in every price range so you can really see what might suit your style and what might suit your needs there and just sort of shop it in there and see what you find that might work out for you.
TOM: Yeah, my experience has been, in general, that the vents themselves, the ventilation fans are not strong enough. So you really do want to have a good-quality one. That’s the way – the best way to get all of that nasty, exhaust gas from your stove outside of the house.
JEFF: Yeah, that’s what I found with this one. I had a plastic fan in there …
TOM: Yeah, exactly. That’s …
JEFF: … and when that debris got in there it completely destroyed it.
TOM: Yeah. No, this is a good opportunity for an upgrade.
JEFF: OK.
TOM: Jeff, thanks so much for calling us at 1-888-MONEY-PIT, 888-666-3974.
