Tom Kraeutler: Making good homes better, welcome back to the Money Pit Top Products Podcast coming to you from the International Hardware Show in Las Vegas Nevada. I’m Tom Kraeutler.
Leslie Segrete: I’m Leslie Segrete.
Tom Kraeutler: Leslie, we’ve said time and time again that this show is famous for innovation, and our next guest is evidence of that.
Leslie Segrete: This really is an amazing innovation. We have Jerry Phlippeau to introduce us to a brand new product and project that he’s been working on with Westinghouse. Welcome, Jerry.
Jerry Phlippeau: Hey, how you doing?
Tom Kraeutler: You tell me that you’ve got something the size of an iPhone that can jump start a car?
Jerry Phlippeau: I’ve got something smaller than an iPhone, plus that can start your car.
Tom Kraeutler: Wow.
Jerry Phlippeau: Everybody knows traditional iPhones, right?
Tom Kraeutler: Yep.
Jerry Phlippeau: Imagine if you had something as small in that in your car at any moment, and it could jump start your car. Not only that, it could also charge your … if you’re stranded your iPhone, your tablet, anything that has a USB cable.
Tom Kraeutler: Wow.
Leslie Segrete: No jumper cables required? How does this work?
Jerry Phlippeau: Mini jumper cables required.
Leslie Segrete: Mini jumper cables?
Jerry Phlippeau: You keep these here in your glove compartment, right?
Leslie Segrete: Right, so these are basically short corded jumper cables.
Jerry Phlippeau: Right.
Tom Kraeutler: Yes.
Leslie Segrete: Red and black just like you’d recognize them.
Tom Kraeutler: Maybe twelve inches of cable total.
Jerry Phlippeau: Right. Right. Then you have your power bank that you can use all the time to charge your phones, or whatever you have, any of your devices that power depletes.
Tom Kraeutler: Okay.
Leslie Segrete: Okay.
Jerry Phlippeau: What you do, you get in the car. Everyone knows that sound, right?
Tom Kraeutler: Okay, yep.
Jerry Phlippeau: We’re familiar with that, especially living in the Midwest. What you do, is you take your power bank, you put your adapter, there are multiple safety functions in this so you don’t have to worry about sparking, you don’t have to worry about anything, any kind of hazards. Open up your hood, you simply clip it on.
Leslie Segrete: It’s black first, right? It’s always black first?
Jerry Phlippeau: Black first.
Tom Kraeutler: Black is negative, right?
Jerry Phlippeau: Black first, and there you go. You get a green signal light here.
Tom Kraeutler: Right.
Jerry Phlippeau: That says you’re good to go.
Tom Kraeutler: Okay.
Jerry Phlippeau: I’ve got a little demo here of a car.
Tom Kraeutler: Yes, I see headlights I think.
Jerry Phlippeau: I’m going to go ahead and show you what happens now. Immediately full power to the car.
Tom Kraeutler: Wow.
Leslie Segrete: That’s awesome.
Jerry Phlippeau: I take that off, you’ve got a completely dead battery, what happens here? Nothing. No power.
Tom Kraeutler: That’s pretty cool. What’s the magic inside?
Leslie Segrete: That’s awesome.
Tom Kraeutler: What makes this happen?
Jerry Phlippeau: It’s top secret.
Tom Kraeutler: Of course.
Jerry Phlippeau: If I tell you, I’m going to have to take you out back. Actually it’s a built in power bank.
Tom Kraeutler: Okay.
Jerry Phlippeau: There’s a battery system that basically stores energy and power. You can reuse it, you can recharge it back through a USB through your cigarette lighter, through your home, or whatever.
Leslie Segrete: How long does it take to recharge?
Jerry Phlippeau: It takes less than an hour.
Tom Kraeutler: Wow.
Leslie Segrete: One full charge on this will jump start your car once?
Jerry Phlippeau: Many, many times. Several, several times.
Tom Kraeutler: Really?
Leslie Segrete: I could jump start my car, charge my phone?
Tom Kraeutler: Yeah, I was going to say …
Jerry Phlippeau: You send out on calls and you could make some extra cash by going and jump starting down the road.
Tom Kraeutler: There you go.
Leslie Segrete: Geez Louise.
Tom Kraeutler: You could really charge up anything with thing?
Jerry Phlippeau: Right. Yeah, you can charge up anything that has a USB cable, plenty of power stored. The Westinghouse brand, we all know is a very, very, very good brand. We manufacture to a very high standard so you don’t have to worry about any safety issues with the product whatsoever.
Tom Kraeutler: Is there anything like this on the market?
Jerry Phlippeau: There are some items similar on the market. They’re rather bulky. There are some items that have been on the market that aren’t don’t go through the proper safety testing.
Tom Kraeutler: Testing.
Jerry Phlippeau: We manufacture to a very, very high standard. We make a very safe product that’s very reliable.
Tom Kraeutler: Wow, that’s really cool.
Leslie Segrete: Now I imagine this is something we see in every person’s glove box, or with them at all times.
Jerry Phlippeau: We hope so.
Leslie Segrete: What is the price point, is that doable?
Jerry Phlippeau: I think it’s doable. I mean, for $99 you have …
Leslie Segrete: That’s reasonable.
Tom Kraeutler: That’s great. I mean we’d pay that just to not have to run out of battery power on our phones.
Jerry Phlippeau: Right.
Leslie Segrete: Completely.
Jerry Phlippeau: Yeah, yeah. The choices that you have, it’s not just jump starting the car, but it’s keeping in touch … honestly think about it.
Tom Kraeutler: Right.
Jerry Phlippeau: You have a storm or whatnot and you’re always in touch.
Leslie Segrete: Now you’ve got a full charge on this, how long will that charge maintain in the device should you not use it? Like you’re just storing it.
Jerry Phlippeau: Around a year.
Tom Kraeutler: Really, so the power has a really slow leak then?
Leslie Segrete: Really?
Jerry Phlippeau: Yes.
Tom Kraeutler: Can you tell how charged the device is, is there a meter on it?
Jerry Phlippeau: There is a meter on the side here. Let’s see if this one comes on. We’ve got a full, almost a full charge here. We’ve been using this the the entire show. Demoing, after demo, after demo, so you can see hardly any usages.
Leslie Segrete: Charging people’s phones, and letting people stop by and do it again.
Jerry Phlippeau: Whatever, and then there’s also a flashlight on here. Which I don’t know how to use. This is a brand new product. This a brand new product, we made it smaller. I don’t know how to turn the flashlight on, but it’s pretty impressive, but there is a flashlight on here.
Tom Kraeutler: We believe you.
Jerry Phlippeau: Okay, good. I’m glad you trust me.
Tom Kraeutler: You have the big light bulb, you don’t need the flashlight.
Jerry Phlippeau: Yeah, we don’t need that.
Tom Kraeutler: That’s pretty cool, Jerry, where can we find this? Is it on the market yet?
Jerry Phlippeau: It’s going to just be entering the market here soon, so I would look out for it. Look out for the Westinghouse, we have the license for all of the Westinghouse power and batteries. We have a whole line of batteries coming onboard, and at a very, very high quality and an incredible value.
Tom Kraeutler: The name of the product is?
Jerry Phlippeau: This product here is going to be called the Westinghouse Auto Jump and Power Mobile Kit.
Tom Kraeutler: Jerry Phlippeau, the director of innovation for Westinghouse. Thank you so much for being a part of the Money Pit Top Products podcast, and introducing this really promising technology here.
Jerry Phlippeau: Thank you.
