LESLIE: Dave, what’s going on?
DAVE: I’m having a hard time keeping our popcorn ceilings clean and I was just wondering if there’s an easy way that I can paint over the popcorn without the stuff …
LESLIE: Falling down on your head. As a matter of fact, there is. Next time you’re at The Home Depot or any home center in your area, there’s a yellow, foam roller cover and instead of it being a solid foam roller, it has slices all around it so that as it paints over the popcorn the foam opens up to allow the popcorn raised piece to go into that. It paints all around that little popcorn piece and it won’t remove it at all.
DAVE: OK. I have another question. Is it easy enough to take that popcorn finish off the ceilings and then paint what’s left?
TOM: It’s really not too hard to do. The secret here is to wet the ceiling as much as you can and then you’re going to scrape that popcorn off with a metal spackle knife and you just work it very, very carefully. And I will tell you that when you get it off, the ceiling is probably going to be a little lumpier than what you would like. But as long as you prime it and then use a flat paint on it, I think it will look fine. You don’t want to use anything with a sheen to it because that will highlight any of the bumps that are remaining.
DAVE: OK. But it is easy enough to get that popcorn off it?
TOM: Yeah, you’ll find …
LESLIE: It’s much easier than you think.
TOM: Yeah, it’s much easier than you think.
DAVE: OK.
TOM: Alright, Dave?
DAVE: Listen, I appreciate the help.
TOM: You’re very welcome. Thanks so much for calling us.
