In the dead of winter, what could be nicer than stepping out of the shower onto a nice warm floor? Adding radiant heat to the bath can actually be a do-it-yourself project, assuming experience with electricity. Radiant heat panels — like mini electric blankets — can be placed under wood, laminate or tile. A thin electric mat installed in thinset cement and controlled by a timer-thermostat will cost about $500 to $700 to install in an average-size bathroom, and will operate on less than 10 cents a day in electricity.
