Tom: Welcome to The Money Pit’s Top Products podcast. I’m Tom Kraeutler reporting from Greenbuild 2015. If you’ve owned a laminate floor or an engineered hardwood floor, you know that they can be noisy. Clicking is a very common complaint when it comes to walking on those type of floors. There’s a company out that has changed the way that happens. It’s called MP Global Products, and they’re famous for a product called Quiet Walk. It’s a floating floor underlayment that goes under engineered hardwood and laminate to make those surfaces and others much more quieter and comfortable to walk on.

Now they’re out with a new product that solves another sort of age-old problem in the house, and that’s chilly floors. It’s called Perfectly Warm. It’s a radiant heat film that goes under floating floors. With me to talk about that is Jack Besh from MP Global Products. Hi, Jack. Tell me how Perfectly Warm works.

Jack: Perfectly Warm is a film heat that actually can be used for floating floors. You put down our Quiet Walk underlayment for a thermal break, and then you put down the film heat, the Perfectly Warm film heat. It basically has two wires pre-attached. The mats come in different sizes so you can configure different rooms. You can use it to heat an entire room, or you can use it for spot heat. For instance, in a bedroom: Rather than go wall to wall with the heat, because you don’t need it underneath the bed, you can put a mat on each side of the bed and have foot comfort when you jump out of bed in the middle of the night or in the morning. You can put it in front of the bathroom sink. You can just basically put it where you want heat for your feet.

Tom: So you don’t get that foot shock when you step on the cold floors.

Jack: Correct. Your pets love it, too.

Tom: Now, when you talk about electric heat, generally it’s a very expensive type of heat to have: Installation, product cost is low compared to other built-in systems, but it’s pretty costly to run. Is this any different?

Jack: This is very, very cost efficient. You can heat a floor for pennies per day per square foot. The average, depending on where you live and what you’re paying for your electricity, you can heat a floor for 6 to 7 cents per square foot per day to heat the floor.

Tom: You don’t have to run this 24/7 either. Can it be hooked up to a thermostat, specifically a programmable thermostat?

Jack: Yes. A programmable thermostat actually is what’s going to help drive that cost per day down, because once the floor gets up to the heat that’s desired, the thermostat will control it; just kick on and off like you would a furnace to keep your floor at that heat, so once it’s regulated by a thermostat, your cost per square foot actually goes down for operation.

Tom: We’re talking to Jack Besh from MP Global Products about Perfectly Warm, a radiant heat film for floating floors. Will this also work under tile floors?

Jack: Yes, we have a version of it for tile floors. It’s got a peel and stick application. You peel the backing off, stick it down to the subfloor, and then it’s covered with a mesh that you would just trowel out, thinset, and set your tile traditionally.

Tom: Terrific. Jack, thanks so much for stopping with The Money Pit. It sounds like a terrific product.

Jack: Great, thank you.

Tom: If you’d like more information about Perfectly Warm, head on over to mpglobalproducts.com.
