TOM: Need a getaway that’s as close as your backyard? Why not build a greenhouse? Hi. I’m Tom Kraeutler.
LESLIE: And I’m Leslie Segrete with today’s Money Pit Home Improvement Minute.
TOM: Today, do-it-yourselfers are building backyard greenhouses more than ever and they’re not just for gardening. Modern greenhouses can serve as a bonus living area, offering a convenient, relaxing escape.
LESLIE: The range of materials, sizes, and styles appeals to every investment level.
TOM: With DIY greenhouse kits or plans, pay attention to the materials. Wood is strong and easy to work with but it needs to be treated to prevent rot. Aluminum and galvanized steel are also strong but these conduct heat and cold.
LESLIE: For greenhouse glazing, tempered glass is strong and easy to maintain but take a look at acrylic and polycarbonate glazing, too. These materials can last for years and offer great light transmission. I’m Leslie Segrete.
