Is there a downside to having an old bathtub reglazed as opossed to replacing it?
Our Answer
Reglazing a tub is an OK option for a tub that does not get used that often. As the finish although if done professionally will make the tub look great, it simply does not wear as well as the original porcelain finish did.
This is not to say not to do this. But if your an active household that uses this bath a lot and it requires lots of scrubbing all the time to keep the tub clean. This is not the best option for you. But if this is a bath that perhaps only gets used when guests come by and not prone to the kids toys etc. Then this finish should last you for several years.
This all assumes that your having a professional person come in and clean and spray the tub. The kits you purchase at the big box stores simply do not look as good as you would want, unless your really experienced at painting. They do not last as long as the type of material used is much different then the products commercially available to those who make a living at this type of work.

Hi Mya,
We actually get asked this question often. The problem is, when you do the reglazing yourself it tends not to hold up. Listen to our answer about reglazing a tub that we offered a fellow Money Pit fan and decide how you want to go with this project. Good luck and remember to post photos of the finished product!
