If you have kids in the house then there are sure to be stains on their clothes. Fast treatment is best, but not always possible. Here are two stain removal ideas for kids clothes:
- If the treatment calls for a prewash stain remover, use the stick type. It can stay on unwashed clothes for up to a week.
- Toss the item in the wash as soon as possible with lots of water and some detergent or a laundry pre-soak product. Let it soak.
If you’re dealing with a colored item, try not to soak it longer than overnight. Soaking too long may damage the color. Here is a list of specific treatments for stain removal on kids clothes based on the most common kid stains, from Good Housekeeping’s “Stain Rescue! The A-Z Guide to Removing Smudges,Spots and Other Spills“.
- Baby Food – Pre-soak the clothing in cold water and liquid laundry detergent. Launder in warm water. Repeat as necessary.
- Blood – To remove blood from kid’s clothes, flush a fresh stain with cold water and soak in cold water. If the stain has dried, pretreat or soak in warm water with an enzyme laundry product. If the stain remains, try sponging with hydrogen peroxide or using a bleach safe for the type of fabric stained and repeat laundering.
- Gum – If the gum is still soft, rub with an ice cube to harden. Scrape off as much as you can with a dull knife. Sponge the clothing with a dry cleaning solvent, rinse and launder as usual.
- Crayon – Place the stain between clean paper towels and press with a warm, dry iron (no steam) to transfer the stain to the towels. Repeat as necessary using fresh towels each time. Be careful not to transfer stains to other parts of the material! Launder as usual.
- Grass – Pretreat your kid’s stained clothing with a prewash stain remover that contains enzymes. Launder, using the hottest water that’s safe for that fabric.
Stain removal sometimes takes lots of practice and plenty of patience, but with the right stain remover, you can keep your kid’s clothing stain free and ready for the next youngster to wear.
