A new shower head is a quick bathroom upgrade that can go a long way — and make getting ready in the morning that much more enjoyable. You can replace a shower head yourself, even if you’re new to DIY. With a range of options to choose from, the cost of this project depends on the shower head you select. Here’s what you’ll need to replace a shower head.
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Adjustable Wrench
- Tongue & Groove Pliers
- Plumber’s Tape
- Cloth
- Showerhead
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.
STEP ONE
Remove old shower head. Start by placing a cloth or towel around the stem of your old shower head to avoid scratching it. Use tongue and groove pliers to hold the stem in place, and a wrench to loosen and remove the old head. You’ll find plumber’s tape, also known as thread seal tape, or PTFE tape underneath. Peel the tape off.
STEP TWO
Now is the time to install the new shower head. Seal the connection between the stem and your new shower head by wrapping the threads with a thin layer of tape. Apply it clockwise to help it stay in place. Screw the new shower head onto the threaded stem, and tighten gently with a wrench, being careful not to over-tighten. If your shower head features additional attachments, install them per manufacturer instructions.
When your new shower head is securely installed, turn on the shower to check for leaks and make any necessary adjustments.
Congratulations — your installation is complete!
