When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.
STEP ONE
Outline area. Start by outlining the damaged area with a framing square. Use a drywall saw to remove the damaged piece and a utility knife to clean the edge if needed.
STEP TWO
Add support pieces. Large patches need to be supported by some kind of backing. Wood strips are excellent for this. Place wood strips a few inches longer that the height of your cutout, inside the hole. Then, attach them with drywall screws. Repair clips can be used as an alternative to drywall screws. Simply follow directions on the package.
STEP THREE
Insert patch. Cut a drywall patch 1/8 of an inch smaller than your cutout’s dimensions and attach it to the wooden support pieces with drywall screws. Apply mesh tape over the gaps and finish with three coats of drywall compound. Allow each coat to dry according to manufacture instructions. Once the final coat is dry, sand and paint as needed.
Your drywall repair is now complete!
