LESLIE: Now we’re going to help Roberta in Oregon deal with a painting situation.
What happened, Roberta.
ROBERTA: I had my house painted. He painted over flat with an oil paint and now it’s peeling off.
TOM: Ah, that’s a common mistake and here’s what’s happening, Roberta. You need to make sure have good adhesion and it sounds to me like the original coat of paint had failed and started to delaminate itself. And if you put good paint over bad paint, then it’s not going to stick and you’re going to peel just like it’s doing right now. The missing step was primer. Whenever you’re going to paint over an old house paint situation where the paint’s staring to fade and probably chalk a little bit, you really need to prime it first because the primer is specially designed to bond with the old surface and to really absorb it and create the new surface that’s very adhesive for the top layer of paint.
So in this situation, what you’re going to have to do is really have all of that loose paint taken off; get down to the raw surface; prime it and then repaint it. That’s the only way that it’s going to stay. If you don’t put the primer on there, it’s just not going to work.
Roberta, thanks so much for calling us at 1-888-MONEY-PIT.
