Winter Mulch
TOM: As you wrap up the season’s yard work before winter, make sure to tuck your flower beds in with a protective layer of mulch. Hi, I’m Tom Kraeutler.

TOM: Winter weather can be especially rough on landscape plantings. Any layer of mulch protects them from the elements and encourages growth when spring arrives.
LESLIE: If you live in an area with weather extremes, you’ll need to cover landscape beds with an extra thick layer of mulch. Four inches will do the trick for your winter wonderland.
TOM: Leaves you rake up can also be part of the mulch solution mixed with other ingredients. Just be sure to rake away the excess leaves that fall on top of beds and plantings as too heavy a layer can encourage rot underneath.
LESLIE: Continue this routine into the warmer seasons with a lighter layer of mulch, and you’ll enjoy better blooms. I’m Leslie Segrete.
