LESLIE: Manuel in Hawaii, what are you working on at your house?
MANUEL: I’m working on fixing my windows.
TOM: OK.
MANUEL: This is my problem. I want to replace my jalosy hardware …
TOM: OK.
MANUEL: … and I can get the new replacement one. However, the glass will not fit in the new hardware because it’s just a little bit – about one-eighth or so – too long.
TOM: Hmm. And the glass is probably hardened, so you can’t cut it.
MANUEL: It’s not the tempered glass. It’s the old-fashioned glass.
TOM: OK.
MANUEL: You know, because I’ve cut it before.
TOM: Alright. Well, if you can cut it before, then you should be able to cut it. What’s happens if you score it and then if you grab the ends – and there’s a tool that is wide and it’s kind of like a very wide-jawed plier but it’s not a plier and I don’t know exactly what it’s called. But you can grab it and score it and break off just a little bit of glass. It’s like a nibbler.
MANUEL: Well, I took it to the professionals to have it trimmed and they told me, “Forget it. Throw it away.”
TOM: They want to sell you new glass?
MANUEL: Well, they just told me that it won’t work because if they did it, it was going to break anyway.
TOM: Ah, well. You know …
LESLIE: Mm-hmm.
TOM: Yeah, maybe they’re right.
LESLIE: I mean it might just be easier, also, to get something that’s tempered.
MANUEL: Well, how can I get hardware like the old one?
TOM: Jalosy windows is generally not something that you want to save because they’re so leaky and drafty.
LESLIE: Yeah, but in a climate like Hawaii, it’s almost ideal because you want that cross breeze. So every home has it.
MANUEL: That is wonderful, dear. I’m glad you said that.
LESLIE: Well, we have friends who live in – on the other side of Diamond Head in Oahu and all their windows are jalosy. And it just gets this beautiful breezeway. They never use air conditioning.
MANUEL: The beautiful trade winds come through here.
TOM: Mm, that’s probably why you were able to find the replacement hardware; because there’s a demand there.
LESLIE: You know, it might just be worth it to pick up a new piece of glass; get tempered glass. Because if you guys ever have an earthquake condition again, you don’t want to worry about that glass breaking.
