Concrete vases aren’t just stylish. They’re easy to make. They’re also a great way to reuse plastic and cardboard containers you have around the house. In this four step beginner’s level project, we’ll walk you through a simple casting technique that results in beautiful concrete vases that look great indoors and out. Here’s what you’ll need for this quick, inexpensive task:
TOOLS
- Mini Hacksaw
- Utility Knife
- Sanding Block
- Heavy Duty Tape
- Cordless Drill/Driver
- Mixing Paddle
- Aviation Snips (Opt.)
MATERIALS
- 1 ½” x 2’ PVC Pipe
- Buckets
- Empty Plastic Container
- Quick-Drying Concrete Mix
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.
STEP ONE
Cut PVC pipe. You PVC pipe will need to be one inch shorter than the height of your plastic container. Measure the height of your container, subtract once inch, and cut to length with a mini hacksaw. After making your cut, tape one end so it’s completely covered.
STEP TWO
Mix concrete. Carefully mix the concrete in a bucket, according to manufacturer’s instructions, until it reaches a pancake batter consistency.
STEP THREE
Fill mold. Place your containers in a plastic bin to contain any overflow. Pour the concrete into your containers, tapping on a firm surface every so often to release any loose sections or air pockets. When the container is almost full, place the PVC pipe, taped side down, into the concrete. Center it, and stop when the top of the pipe is just below the concrete and top of the container. Wipe away any excess and let set per manufacturer’s instructions. Drying time is typically about twenty-four hours.
STEP FOUR
Remove cast. With your containers still in a plastic bin, use a utility knife to cut away the plastic and remove the mold. Allow one day to cure and sand, if needed.
Add flowers. Then, step back and admire your new concrete vase.
