A door sweep is one of the cheapest ways to cut your energy cost and boost your comfort, especially during cold months. Installing one is an inexpensive task great for those new to DIY. Here’s what you’ll need for this quick project:
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Measuring Tape
- Hacksaw
- Miter Box
- Metal File
- Drill/Driver With Bits
- Phillips Screwdriver
- Door Sweep
- Painter’s Tape
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear. We’ll let you know throughout the video when you should and should not use the safety gear.
STEP ONE
Measure and mark the door. Start by measuring the bottom of your door from side to side. Then, mark the door sweep for cutting.
STEP TWO
Cut the sweep. Cut the sweep with a hacksaw according to your measurements using a miter box for a square cut. Remove any burrs with a metal file.
STEP THREE
Tape or slide the sweep on. Position the sweep on the bottom of the door so the flange bends as it contacts the threshold of the doorway. Temporarily attach the sweep to the door using painter’s tape. For slide-on sweep, slide the sweep into place with the door partially open, positioning it so when the door’s closed it seals at the threshold.
STEP FOUR
Mark and drill holes. Mark and drill each hole. We recommend pre-drilling to prevent the wood from splitting.
STEP FIVE
Fasten at each end. Install a screw at each end of the sweep, then open and close your door. The sweep should seal the door, but not make it difficult to close. Remove the tape on surface-mount installations and make any necessary adjustments. Once you’re satisfied with the placement, install the remaining fasteners.
STEP SIX
Install fasteners. Drill holes for the fasteners and complete the installation.
