A peep hole in your front door gives you the security of knowing who’s on the other side of it. Adding a peep hole viewer to your door is a simple project that’s quick, inexpensive, and suitable for those new to DIY. Here’s what you’ll need for this three-step project:
TOOLS & MATERIALS
-
- Tape Measure
- Drill
- Drill Bit
- Step Ladder
- Pencil
- Door Peephole Kit
- Silicone Sealant
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.
STEP ONE
Prepare. Locate the center of your door with a tape measure. Mark the area where you want to install the peep hole. We recommend choosing a spot that’s between eye and shoulder level for most members of your household. Refer to manufacturer’s instructions to identify the size hole you’ll need to drill. Then select the appropriate bit.
STEP TWO
Drill the hole. Begin drilling slowly from the exterior side of the door. Once the drill bit pokes out from the interior side enough for a pilot hole, retract your drill bit and finish drilling from the interior side of the door.
STEP THREE
Install the viewer. Your viewer kit should contain a lens and barrel. Apply a small bead of silicone sealant to the inside of the lens where it meets the door. Insert the lens from the exterior side of the door, and the barrel from the interior side, then thread the two together tightly. A coin can help tighten it further. Your viewer should fit flush against the door without any movement.
Your installation is complete. Enjoy the added security of your new peep hole.
