You might not know that your attic plays a huge part in keeping your heating bills down. That’s something that will be very important this winter as energy costs continue to rise. Having enough insulation is huge. In fact, it’s the single most important thing you can do to cut energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from your home. The experts at the Department of Energy say you need 19 inches in fiberglass batt insulation or 22 inches of blown insulation.
Now, just as important is making sure that insulation is doing its job by maintaining a dry, well-ventilated attic. Make sure your bath exhaust fans are not venting directly into your attic. And if you find you need to add more insulation, used unfaced batt. This will help you avoid trapping moisture between the original insulation and the new stuff you’re adding. At the home shows I’m seeing a product call E Shield or Radiant Barrier. The product looks like a sheet of foil. The product the company would like to install looks like a flexible foil with a thin piece of insulation. The company that came over to look at my home suggested I add 3 more inches of blow in insulation and then top it off with the blanket of foil. What do you know about this product and would you suggest using this product. I would like to have it installed but i’m afraid the product may start mold because the foil like product may trap in moisture, and then cause more problems.
