If your heating and air conditioning ducts aren’t insulated, you’re losing money by letting hot air leak out in the winter and cold air leak out in the summer. Luckily, insulating ducts is an easy, inexpensive project you can finish in an afternoon. Here’s what you’ll need to insulate your ducts:
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Tape Measure
- Scissors
- Duct Mastic
- Self-Stick Foam/Foil Duct Insulation
- HVAC Foil Tape
- Step Ladder (if needed)
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.

STEP ONE
Measure ductwork. Start by measuring the length of the duct run you’ll be working on. If the duct you’re insulating has square edges, measure its height and width. Your measurements will determine how much insulation you’ll need.
STEP TWO
Cut and apply insulation. Cut the insulation to length with scissors adding one to two inches for overlap. Remove the paper backing. Align a strip along the top edge of the duct and push down the exposed end. Adhere the rest of the insulation using a two by four to smooth as you go. If your duct has other ducts branching off it, use scissors to cut and fit insulation around intersections.
STEP THREE
Tape joint. Use HVAC foil tape to seal seams between lengths of insulation. If you’re using non-adhesive insulation, have a helper hold it while you secure it with tape. Overlap the next piece and tape into place. Continue this process for all strips in the run. Be sure to seal the insulation at both ends and at any intersections.
Your project is complete. Step back and admire your work.
