Curtains make a room feel complete. They also block out bright light and increase privacy. Hanging them is an easy job, even those new to DIY can do in just 30 minutes to an hour. All that’s required is a bit of planning and some basic tools and supplies.

TOOLS & MATERIALS

  • Power Drill/Driver
  • Stud Finder
  • Tape Measure
  • Screwdriver
  • Carpenter’s Square
  • Pencil
  • Curtain Rod Set
  • Curtains
  • Sheer Curtains
  • Wall Anchors

When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear. Throughout the video, we’ll alert you regarding when you should and should not use the safety gear.

STEP 1

Measure window. Before shopping for curtains and hardware, measure the height and width of your window. Make a quick diagram of the window with measurements in place, noting where you want your curtains to start and stop. We recommend adding an extra three inches on each side of the window for overhang. In this project, we hang the curtains on the window trim, but feel free to hang yours however you’d like.

STEP 2

Install rod. Determine placement for your rod brackets, making sure they’re even on both sides of the window. If you’ll be attaching them to drywall, use a stud finder to make sure you’re drilling into studs. If there’s not a stud where you need one, use drywall anchors. Mark where your brackets will go, then attach them.

STEP 3

Hang curtains. Place the sheer curtain on the rod. Then place the rod into the mounting brackets. Repeat this process for your decorative curtains, then secure the rod with the screws provided.

STEP 4

Install accessories. If you have any accessories, install them now. We installed finials and holdbacks for our curtains. If any of your accessories require drilling into your wall, always use a stud finder to find and mark your studs or use drywall anchors, if necessary.

Your installation is complete. Step back and enjoy your new curtains.
