Fran asks,
Recently, the bathtub in my daughter’s bathroom started draining very, very slowly. I bought a bottle of Draino from the local store, followed the directions on the bottle, and after a hour I went to flush the tub. The water now drains faster than before, but as soon as you turn the water off and the tub starts to drain, I hear loud gurgling sounds from the drain as the water leaves. What could be causing this loud noise? My house sits on a slab foundation, so I can’t check the pipes. Any ideas folks? FYI, the house was built back in 1996.
If your daughter has any kind of long hair over time it will end up in the drain. If your tub drain has a “pop top” on it then first remove it to access the drain. Look and see if anything is caught on the top of it like a big wad of hair. Get a coat hanger and make a small hook on the end. Push it down the drain and slowly twist it in a circle. It will catch the hair and then pull it out slowly. Keep repeating this process until your sure it’s clear. Drano and other products have their places but usually don’t work and can cause other problems. A drain doesn’t just stop working unless it’s totally plugged and hair can do that cause it prevents everything from draining. I’ve had to clean ours lots due to hair from my wife. A house built in 1996 won’t have any kind of brass or steel drainage and will be entirely PVC or ABS. I’m also a plumber, and have been doing residential for over 10 years. Hope this helps. Cheers
