When it comes to kitchen cleanup, there’s nothing like a garbage disposal. If your trash disposal needs to be replaced, save yourself money by installing it yourself in just six simple steps.
Here’s what you’ll need for this quick project:
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Flat Head Screwdriver
- Sink Drain Wrench
- Plumber’s Putty
- Wire Connectors
- Cable Connector
- Garbage Disposal
- Hose Clamp
- Hacksaw (Optional)
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.
STEP ONE
Prepare sink. Start by turning off the power to your garbage disposal from your home’s main circuit breaker box. Then disconnect the drain lines underneath your sink. You want to have some rags or a bucket on hand to catch any water that spills out. Once you disconnect the lines, remove your existing disposal with a screwdriver and sink drain wrench. Once detached from the sink, unhook the electrical connections from the disposal, move it aside, and unscrew the sink drain. After prying off the lid (ph) piece with a flat head screwdriver, you should be left with an empty hole in the bottom of your sink. Use a damp rag to clean the area before installing your new disposal. This will prevent any dirt, buildup, or old putty from interfering with the seal for your new disposal.
STEP TWO
Apply plumber’s putty. Rub plumber’s putty between your hands until it forms a long, snake-like shape, and wrap it around the base of the flange included with your new disposal. Place the flange in the drain hole and set firmly in place.
STEP THREE
Install mounting ring. Following manufacturer’s instructions, install the gasket and mounting rings on the flange, snap the retaining ring in place, and tighten the mounting ring screws until the flange is secure. If you’ll be connecting a dish washer as well, use a screwdriver to knock out the associated plug at the bottom of the garbage disposal.
STEP FOUR
Connect electricity. Remove the electrical cover of the garbage disposal with a screwdriver and pull out the wires. Following manufacturer’s instructions, make your electrical connections by inserting a cable connector in the bottom of the disposal. Then run electrical cable through the access hole at the bottom. Connect the hot, neutral, and ground wires with wire nuts. Place them back in the disposal and replace the cover plate.
STEP FIVE
Attach garbage disposal. Attach your new disposal unit according to manufacturer’s instructions. You’ll do this with either a mounting ring or bolts. Attach the discharge tube to the discharge opening in the. side of the unit using a washer or gasket and clamp into place.
STEP SIX
Connect drain lines. Install drain lines to their corresponding outlets on the disposal and fasten with hose clamps. Trim the putty, cleaning any excess that squeezed through the top of the flange. Then turn the power back on. Test for leaks by plugging the drain, partially filling the sink, then letting it drain while you check the pipes underneath. Your project is complete, and your new disposal is ready to use!
