If you have a concrete driveway, you may notice cracks developing over time. While these cracks may not seem like a problem now, they can create larger structural issues in the future. Repairing a cracked concrete driveway is a quick, inexpensive task suitable for DIYers of all skill levels.
Here’s what you’ll need to take on this three-step project:
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Power Washer
- Caulk Gun
- Putty Knife
- Backer Rod
- Masonry Caulk
- Water
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.
STEP ONE
Power wash. Start by power washing the cracks in your driveway to remove debris. Power wash in small sections, holding the nozzle eight to ten inches away to prevent streaking. Allow the area to dry completely before making your repair.
STEP TWO
Fill with Backer Rod. For large cracks, fill the area with backer rod first to save time and material. If the backer rod won’t stay in the crack on its own, use a bit of masonry caulk to hold it in place.
STEP THREE
Fill with Caulk. Fill the space over the backer rod with masonry caulk. No backer rod is necessary for smaller cracks. Simply fill them with caulk. Smooth the caulk for both large and small cracks with a putty knife, then let dry per manufacturer instructions.
Your repair is complete! Step back and enjoy your smooth, crack-free driveway.
