TOM: Summer is a great time for outdoor projects but if you’re planning on picking up a shovel, you may be putting yourself in danger. Hi. I’m Tom Kraeutler.

LESLIE: And I’m Leslie Segrete with today’s Money Pit Home Improvement Minute. Simple projects like planting trees, installing fences, or building decks can be risky if you don’t first check into underground utility lines.

TOM: It’s very easy to do. Just call 811 from anywhere in the country a few days before you’re ready to dig. Then, the local one-call  center will send a locator to mark the location of any underground lines, pipes, and cables so you’ll know what’s below and be able to dig safely.

LESLIE: Keep in mind, every digging job requires a call. Even small projects like planting shrubs can be dangerous if you connect with gas, water, or power lines. So, whether you’re planning to do it yourself or to hire a pro, make sure your digging plan includes a call to 811. I’m Leslie Segrete.
