Whether it’s in your kitchen or your bathroom, nothing puts a damper on your day like a clogged sink. Even if you’re new to DIY, unclogging a sink is something you can quickly do on your own. All you need are a few tools and supplies.
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Plunger
- Rag
- Tongue & Groove Pliers
- Bucket
- Wire Brush/Wire
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.
STEP ONE
Plunge. Many clogs can be removed with a plunger. If you’re unclogging a bathroom sink, your basin will have an overflow hole. Plug it with a wet rag. This will help create the pressure necessary for the plunger to work properly. Before plunging, remove your sink’s pop-up drain plug and strainer. Press the plunger against the drain hole and pump it a few times. Repeat until you’ve successfully cleared your drain. If your sink is still clogged, continue to Step Two.
STEP TWO
Remove trap. Under your sink, you’ll find a U-shaped pipe called a trap. Place a bucket under it and using a pair of tongue and groove pliers, loosen the slip nuts on both ends. Unscrew the nuts by hand and slide the trap bend away from the connections. The bucket underneath will catch any water sitting in your pipe.
STEP THREE
Clean trap. Use a small wire brush or wire to remove any blockages from the trap bend. Check for debris in the pipes leading to the trap as well. Once you’ve determined the pipes are clear, inspect the slip nut washers for wear and replace if necessary. Reattach the trap bend and tighten the slip nuts. Water should be going down the drain smoothly now.
Congratulations. You’ve unclogged your sink and you did it yourself. Now you know how to unclog a sink.
