It’s easy to ignore your gutters, but it’s not easy to ignore the expensive problems clogged gutters can lead to down the road. Regularly cleaning them is something that should be on every homeowner’s to do list. Instead of hiring a pro, you could do it yourself. All you need are some basic tools and supplies.
Here’s what you should have on hand for this beginner’s level project:
Tools & Materials You’ll Need to Clean Gutters
- Garden Hose w/Nozzle
- Garden Trowel
- Bucket or Trash Bag
- Step Ladder
- Non-Slip Shoes
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear. Throughout the video, we’ll alert you regarding when you should and should not use the safety gear.
STEP ONE
Set up ladder. An eight-foot ladder will typically work to clean first-floor gutters. If you have to work over bushes or other low plantings, or if you need to get to second-story gutters, you’ll need to use an extension ladder.
STEP TWO
Remove debris. If it’s rained recently, wait a few days to clean your gutters, as wet debris is messier and heavier to remove. Before you start working, put on gloves to keep your hands dry and protect them from any sharp edges inside the gutter. Remove debris with a small garden trowel. Then, depending on what’s underneath you, either drop on to a tarp or place in a garbage bag or bucket.
STEP THREE
Rinse the gutter. If your gutters have downspout screens, remove them before rinsing. Place a spray nozzle on your hose, and clean the inside of the gutter beginning at the end farthest from the downspout.
STEP FOUR
Clear downspout. Clear off any debris from screens with your hose and put them back in place. You’ll want to make sure your downspout is also clear of debris, so give it a good spray as well.
Your project is complete! Now you know how to clean gutters whenever they begin to get clogged.
