TOM: There are few appliances more important to daily life than our refrigerators. A few simple steps can make sure they’re running right. Hi, I’m Tom Kraeutler.

LESLIE: And I’m Leslie Segrete with today’s Money Pit Home Improvement Minute. First, make sure the temperature is correct. Food will spoil in a fridge that’s too warm, but a fridge that’s too cold, just wastes energy. The interior temperature should be between 37 and 40 degrees.

TOM: Next, check the door seal. If it’s loose, cold air can escape and make the fridge work harder. To check the seal, close a dollar bill in the fridge door. If it slips out easily, the gasket may need to be replaced.

LESLIE: Always store your food in air-tight containers. Uncovered foods and liquids release moisture, making the refrigerator’s compressor work much harder.

TOM: Finally, the coils in the back of your refrigerator should be cleaned regularly. Pull the fridge away from the wall twice a year and vacuum away dust and debris. I’m Tom Kraeutler.

LESLIE: And I’m Leslie Segrete. For more Money Pit Home Improvement tips, visit moneypit.com.
