    White House Home Improvement Trivia

TOM: Every home needs maintenance and improvement, but you might be surprised how much of that is needed for the nation’s first house at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Here is some White House Home Improvement Trivia for you to know! Hi, I’m Tom Kraeutler.

LESLIE: And I’m Leslie Segrete with today’s Money Pit Home Improvement Minute.

TOM: Throughout history, the White House has seen its share of renovations, delays and do overs. George Washington launched construction in 1792 but it wasn’t ready for residence until 1800 when John and Abigail Adams first moved in.

LESLIE: By the Truman administration, the White House’s load bearing walls were close to failure. So the first family moved across the street while the home was gutted and fitted with a new steel frame.

TOM: With 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms and 6 levels, the White House has a team of plumbers, carpenters, electricians and handymen to handle every need.

LESLIE: The people’s house is also a perpetual painting project. A year round staff of painters keep its finish pristine using 570 gallons of paint for each coat of the exterior. I’m Leslie Segrete.
