If you like the idea of fresh, locally-grown produce but can’t get it during cold weather, why not try growing it on your own? With the right light, the right soil and the right pot, you can grow herbs and even some vegetables all year long.

The key is to find a location in your home with good lighting. Sometimes you have to have as much as six hours of direct sunlight a day for certain vegetables to grow and thrive. You’ll also need enough room for the containers, which will be roughly 18 inches in diameter and 18 inches deep.

Watering is important, too, so the next step is to work out some kind of drainage system.

You can actually find mini-greenhouses online, and with more people container gardening, seed companies are working on vegetables specifically bred to be grown indoors in containers.
