If you think you’re being smart, economical and resourceful by re-using dirty, oily or greasy rags for jobs around the house or garage, think again! They’re a potential fire hazard. Piles of oily rags can spontaneously combust, turning your home into a fireball.
And don’t even think about trying to wash and reuse those rags because if you do your washing machine (and clothes that follow) may smell like those rags for weeks! And, you’re not doing the environment any favors by letting those chemicals get into the wastewater supply. But don’t just toss them in the trash – that’s no good either.
That can be dangerous too, and it’s been known to set off fires in landfills.
Use a large lidded container in your garage for holding rags until your community rag collection day. Fill your container halfway with water and add a cup or two of laundry detergent. Drown your oily rags in there and let them sit until you can dispose of them safely.
Re-using greasy, oily old garage rags may seem green – but it’s not. It’s downright dangerous. Follow these simple tips and keep your home and family safe.
