Should I Get a Metal Roof?
LESLIE: Next, we’re going to go to Virginia where Carolyn has a roofing question.
Carolyn, what can we help you with?
CAROLYN: I would like to know what you recommend. I presently have shingles on the roof and I would like to know do you recommend the metal roofing.
TOM: Well, I mean metal roofing can last 100 years. Do you want to spend the money? Why is it you want to get rid of the shingles?
CAROLYN: (chuckling) I think it’s more or less that the contractor prefers to do the metal.
TOM: Oh, well listen, the contractor’s not living in your house and the contractor’s not paying the bill for the roof, so …
LESLIE: Don’t let him bully you around.
TOM: Exactly. Come on, make your own decision up.
CAROLYN: Alright. So you think then that I should just go on and replace the present shingles with shingles.
LESLIE: Well, how old are the shingles? Is it time?
CAROLYN: It’s time, yes. It’s time to reroof. It really is.
TOM: Well, why is he recommending the metal? Just because he likes to work with the metal roof and charges a lot of money for it?
CAROLYN: I think most of them do, to tell you the truth.
LESLIE: I think it’s time to find another roofer.
TOM: Yeah, exactly.
CAROLYN: And you don’t see any particular value. This is a modern-style ranch house; it’s 50 years old, though.
TOM: Well, I mean there’s nothing wrong with metal roofing but we don’t like the idea that the contractor is trying to shove it down your throat. You’re the customer, Carolyn. OK? Contractor presents the options; you make the decision, not him.
CAROLYN: Well, if it were your house, would you go with metal or with shingles?
LESLIE: I would go with shingles.
TOM: Alright, Carolyn. Thanks so much for calling us at 888-MONEY-PIT, 888-666-3974. The website is MoneyPit.com. You’re the customer. Stop letting those contractors push you around.
