    How to Build the Perfect Fire

    TOM: There’s nothing like a crackling fire on a winter night, but building and stoking that fire can be frustrating if you’re not doing it right. Here are tips on how to build the perfect fire.  Hi, I’m Tom Kraeutler.

    LESLIE: And I’m Leslie Segrete with today’s Money Pit home improvement minute. For the perfect fire, always use dry or seasoned wood. Crumple up grapefruit-sized balls of newspaper to use as fire starters.

    TOM: Always save the ash bed from your prior fires, as it acts as insulation and it creates a hotter fire. A grate is also key to keeping logs raised so the air can feed the fire from below.

    LESLIE: Never burn treated wood, green or wet wood, cardboard, wrapping paper, or magazines. While those manufactured logs are easy to use, they can also cause a waxy buildup on your chimney liner, which is tough to clean I am here to tell you how to build the perfect fire.

    TOM: Finally, avoid using logs that claim to clean creosote buildup. These can be corrosive and potential damage metal chimney liners. I’m Tom Kraeutler.
