TOM: With festive trees all around there’s plenty of green to see, but it’s also a time we need to be green at home at the same time. Hi, I’m Tom Kraeutler.

LESLIE: And I’m Leslie Segrete with today’s Money Pit Home Improvement Minute.

TOM: Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s the average household generates 25 percent more trash. That’s why it’s more important than ever to keep recycling while we celebrate.

LESLIE: Get creative with less wasteful gift wrapping. Cut down on paper and plastic party goods. And as you make room for new electronics, use e-cycling centers to dispose of old gadgets.

TOM: And the batteries used to power all those gifts also lead to waste. Be kind to the environment and save money by investing in rechargeable battery systems.

LESLIE: Take advantage of holiday tree disposal programs, and any extra decorations and household goods can find new life when you donate them to charity. I’m Leslie Segrete.
