How to Install Gutter Covers
If the thought of cleaning your gutters makes you groan, you’re probably a good candidate for gutter covers. Inexpensive and simple to install, they won’t completely eliminate the chore, but they will reduce the amount of times you’ll need to do it each year, and the amount of debris you’ll need to remove. Here’s what you’ll need for this beginner’s-level project.
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Tin Snips
- Measuring Tape
- Garden Trowel
- Rubber Gloves
- 3-ft. Vinyl Solid Covers
- Non-slip Shoes
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear. Throughout the video, we’ll alert you regarding when you should and should not use the safety gear.
Clean the gutter. It’s important that your gutters and downspouts are completely free of debris before you install covers. Wearing gloves, scoop out any debris with a garden trowel. Rinse the garden with a garden hose equipped with a nozzle, and flush out the downspouts.
Cap the first end. Some covers lay flat on top of the gutter and don’t need to be capped, but due to surface tension design, the cover used here sits above the gutter. Cut a notch deep enough that you have two inches of overlap at the end, which you can then fold over the end of your gutter.
Install the first section. Slightly lift the front of the shingles, and slip the back edge of the cover underneath. Align the folded cap with the outside of the shingle, then pull the front edge of the cover over the lip of the gutter.
Install remaining pieces. Install full cover pieces until the remaining length of gutter is shorter than a full piece. Measure the remaining gutter length, adding three and a half inches to allow for a lip notch and cap fold. Make the notch, fold, and install the last piece. Secure covers with screws provided according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Your installation is complete!
