Water supply line spring a leak? There’s no need to panic, and there’s no need to call a plumber. This is a quick, inexpensive repair you can do yourself in just a few easy steps. Here’s what you’ll need for this beginner’s-level DIY project.
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Adjustable Wrench
- New Water Supply Line
- Small Bucket
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.
STEP ONE
Turn off the water. Turn off the water associated with your toilet or sink by twisting the shutoff valve to the off position. If you’re replacing a toilet supply line, flush the toilet to empty the tank. For sinks, turn on the faucets to drain remaining water from the line.
STEP TWO
Remove old supply line. Place a bucket under the supply line. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the hex nuts connecting it to the toilet or faucet. Once you’ve loosened the nuts, the old supply line will lift free.
STEP THREE
Install the new supply line. Take one end of the new supply line and attach it to the shutoff valve. Hand tighten the hex nut into place, then repeat on the opposite end. Use an adjustable wrench to gently tighten the hex nuts, being careful not to overtighten.
STEP FOUR
Turn on water. Slowly twist the shutoff valve back to the on position. As you do this, examine both ends of the new supply line for any leaks.
