Heat Pump: Trane or American Standard?
LESLIE: Al in Arizona has a heat pump question. What can we do for you?
AL: Yes, I’m just wanting to find out if I want – my unit is 18 years old and I want to find out whether a Trane and the American Standard, if it’s the same. And to get your tax credit, you’ve got to get a 15 SEER, by the way.
TOM: Right, mm-hmm. So what’s your question?
AL: The question – I mean are they equivalent, the American Standard one or the Trane? Because there supposed to be the same company.
TOM: Well, they’re both excellent brands and they’re both good pieces of equipment. I would be completely comfortable with either one. You’re going to find that dealers have a preference for one over the other, but you do mention the critical component here and that is does the heat pump that you are going to install qualify you for the federal tax credit. Because, as you may know, you only have between now and the end of the year to get that installation done and get that tax credit but it’s worth up to 1,500 bucks off of what you owe the federal government in taxes. So now is the time to do that.
AL: Thank you very much. You really helped me.
TOM: You’re welcome, Al.
AL: Now I know what to do. (chuckles)
TOM: Alright, good luck with that project. Thanks so much for calling us at 888-MONEY-PIT.
