This month, we pause to celebrate. Twenty years ago, we had this idea that folks may be interested in getting tips on the care and feeding of their homes. And unlike the movie that celebrated the worst side of home improvement, or the Oak Island buried pirate treasure also known as “the money pit”, we saw things a bit different. To us, a Money Pit isn’t just a house, it’s a home. Just like raising kids, owning a Money Pit is a combination of love, pride and heart-stopping fear – the latter most often occurring when it comes time to repair, replace, remodel or decorate!
Well, it turned out we were right. When we first launched on a dozen stations in October of 1999, we unknowingly stepped into a role many consumers sought; that of home improvement coach, cheerleader and all-around sounding-board for their how-to hopes and dreams. It’s been a role we’ve been honored to fulfill and one we couldn’t have done without the countless consumers who have listened or shared their stories and allowed us to help guide their home improvement dreams.
On the flip side, we’ve also been able to help manufacturers making great products tell their stories. In a way, we were matchmakers, helping to introduce folks to innovative brands and products and services in a way that couldn’t have been done before. Through reviews, integrations, giveaways and interviews with leading experts, we were able to educate, inform and inspire an audience ready to get to work on their homes and apartments. In a way, we started a kind of social media audio medium, well before the first social media platform was launched by giving both consumers and brands a place to share their stories with each other.
Now, The Money Pit Home Improvement Radio Show & Podcast marks 20 years in national syndication this month. We air on over 375 radio stations every weekend and reach an audience of almost 4 million home improvement loving consumers. We are carried by 7 major podcast platforms, where folks are calling or emailing questions 24/7 at an amazing rate. In fact, since first launching in 1999, we’ve produced 2,082 episodes, answered thousands of emailed questions AND fielded over 20,800 calls to the show’s 24/7 (888) MONEY PIT call-in number (which actually was the reason the show was named The Money Pit!)
The story behind how we landed on naming the show The Money Pit was crazy, it actually started with getting the call-in phone numberTom Kraeutler, Host & Founder
Aside from the broadcast, we’ve been interviewed over 2,000 times by television reporters covering new home products, home safety and consumer protection. Our book, My Home, My Money Pit: Your Guide to Every Home Improvement Adventure, has becomes a virtual owner’s manual for homeowners new and seasoned seeking to stay on top of their biggest investment.
Just like building a house, it’s taken many hands to produce this show, podcast and website every week. I want to recognize my amazing co-host Leslie Segrete who for the last 15 years has been a part of what’s made this show great. Plus, the talented team behind us especially Lisa Vitale, Warren Banholzer, Jim Kenzie, Skip Joeckel, Nora DePalma, Holland Cooke and Pam DelHierro. Together, we’ve built the largest home improvement radio show and podcast in history and had a lot of fun along the way.
It’s been one heck of a ride, and it’s far from over. Thanks for coming along and stay tuned.
