Mold Growth on Furniture and Cupboards

we are trying to care for our parents home (they are in a nursing home permanently) and since the house is vacant, we have turned the heat way down (40 degrees), turned off the water to the bathroom stools and turned the water heater way down. Due to our own health problems, we had not been able to check the house for about a month and this week when we went there there was a green mold growth on the kitchen cupboards and living room furniture, probably other places as well.  What can I do to eliminate this problem (clean it off the hardwood surfaces) and then what steps can I take for it to not happen  again.  Is keeping the house temperature this low a problem or what. Where do I start - I haven't a clue.  I know we have to get it cleaned up but really don't know what is safe to use on the wood.  Thanks for "ANY" help your can send my way.
