Q:
The mortar on my fire place is turning to sand. How can I fix the problem. The other problem is my fire place facing is out of date. What can I do to give it a new look. Can i use some kind of tile to cover the facing of the fireplace andI don't want to paint the whole fire place. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Alonzo, we have a couple of solutions for you. First, you should clean and remove any loose mortar between the bricks. Then you can repair it with a process called repointing.
One product we can recommend is from Sakrete called Concrete & Mortar Repair tube. It's a siliconized, acrylic latex that is very durable. This makes the repointing process easy and fast. Follow product directions and FAQ's at Sakrete's website.
The other option is to reface the fireplace. One product that is very DIY friendly for this project is Airstone. AirStone is a faux stone vaneer that can be applied directly to drywall, concrete or brick. Since each piece is lightweight and is easily glued in place, anyone can handle the installation.
Good luck with the project!
