I'm interested in getting a whole house surge protector that can help me avoid blackouts.  What do I need to know beforehand?

Whether you buy an Intermatic, Leviton, or another brand of whole house surge protector, get one with indicator lights to let you know it's working. The unit could sustain a major hit and burn out, but without indicator lights, you wouldn't know you've lost protection on one or both power phases.
Easy to install and relatively inexpensive means of providing protection for your entire electrical system, particularly in storms. I highly recommend.
Here is just one of many that I would use
Intermatic IG1240RC3 Whole Home Type-2 Surge Protection Device by Intermatic 5.0 out of 5 stars (1)
Cost approximatley  $116.72
