Hi, I have an all electric house but have a 500 gal propane tank to heat my pool. I know that in the next five years or so I'll have to replace my water heater and two (5 and 3 ton) heat pump/ACs. I've got some money from an inheritence and want to invest in energy efficiency as I plan to stay in this house for 10 years or longer. Tbe question is: does it make any sense from a economic and comfort standpoint, to switch to propane water and house heating which would require running propane into the house from the tank, a distance of about 140 feet from the tank to the far end of the house where the water heater is located. In addition to the cost of running a gas line into the house which I suspect is expensive, is it cheaper to buy and run a heater and a separate AC rather than the heat pump/AC I now have? If feasible/economic, would this be a relatively straightforward job or would a lot of restructing of the house or its systems be required?
BTW I am also looking at solar solutions and the boring stuff like insulation and window treatments to reduce electricity usage
