Ask Tom & Leslie - Oh, Rats!

“My problem is mice and rats are coming in from the street sewer system. Thought I fixed the problem eight years ago by cementing a certain area but seems to be another opening somewhere. Do you have any suggestions?”

If you’ve ever thought you could rodent-proof your house by sealing up small gaps around the outside, forget it. Mice can squeeze through spaces as small as a nickel, and rats need a space only twice that size to find their way into your home. They’re great climbers and jumpers, too: mice can leap 12 inches into the air and hop down from the same height without injury, and rats can leap 36 inches vertically and jump off of a 50-foot-tall building without a scratch. Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can make your house a much less welcoming place for mice and rats:

Avoid nesting sites: Stacks of newspapers, cardboard boxes, firewood, lumber and other storage encourages nesting. Keep all storage off the ground or floor at the inside and outside foundation perimeters of your home, and make sure all bushes, hedges and other plantings are trimmed back and well away from the foundation.

Secure storage: Mice can squeeze through spaces as small as a finger, so seal up potential entrances with sheet metal, steel wool or cement. Pay particular attention to the spaces around pipes, vents and ducts.

Keep a clean house: Wash dishes and cooking utensils immediately after use. Keep counters and floors free of soiled dishes and food residue, and clean the insides of cabinets and pantries frequently to avoid feeding furry creatures.

Use rodenticides: Poisons designed to eliminate rodent infestations are safe and highly effective if used in accordance with label instructions. If exposure to children or pets is a concern, use lockable bait stations; with these, the poison is secured inside a container that has holes small enough for only a rodent to enter.

Dot Common Sense - Green Building Resource

Are you getting ready for a remodel? Would you like part or all of it to be “green”? How exactly do you find contractors with a conscience? In the GreenHomeGuide of course!

It is estimated that by 2010, residential green building will become a $19 - $38 billion market*. In recognition of this, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry is launching its own Green Certified Professional (GCP) certification in conjunction with GreenHomeGuide.com.

NARI's Green Remodeling certification is designed to recognize remodelers with a solid foundation in Green Remodeling. In order to get the GCP certification, the contractor must have been a fulltime pro for at least five years, conducted remodeling projects using green principles, practices, or products for at least three years and have at least 16 hours of green or sustainable remodeling related continuing education. Fun Fact - Down the Drain

Do you need a simple, cheap way to unclog sluggish drains? You only need three things – and you probably have them in your kitchen. To free up sluggish drains, simply mix ½ cup each of salt, baking soda and vinegar and pour it down the drain. Follow with two quarts boiling water, and you’ve not only saved money, but also your plumbing by using a natural solution instead of harsh chemicals.

Short Cuts - Don't Skip the Sanding!

Repainting cabinets can bring new life to a tired kitchen or bathroom. Washing away the grime before painting your cabinets is a good start, but don’t skip the sanding after that step. Sanding makes sure new paint will stick and is also your chance to smooth away any dings or blemishes in the cabinets. The more you sand, the better your final results will be.
