Ask Tom & Leslie

Is Tile Over Vinyl Ok?

Dear Tom & Leslie,
Is it okay to lay tile over vinyl flooring?
Mark S.
Chicago, IL

Dear Mark,
It would be ok, however we do not know how the adhesive might react with the vinyl flooring.  It might not cause a problem now but in a little while could have a bad reaction and cause your tiles to lift or crack.  We would suggest that you have a new sub floor laid right on top of the vinyl flooring.  You could use ¼” luan plywood.  It is inexpensive and would give you a smooth, clean and flat surface to lay your tile on top of.
Thanks for listening!
Tom & Leslie
