Prescription Drug Abuse: How to Protect Your Kids at Home

Anonymous

Are you safeguarding your prescription medicines at home?  If you’re a parent, you should know that prescription drugs are the most abused drugs in America other than marijuana.

The America Medicine Chest Challenge (AMCC) is a public health initiative to raise awareness about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.  The AMCC will be held in thousands of communities, in 36 states across the country, on November 13, 2010.

prescription drug abuse protect your kids with locking medicine cabinetAMCC was created to help American families see their medicine cabinets through new eyes -- as an access point for potential misuse and abuse of over-the-counter and prescription medicine by their kids.  The AMCC also provides an opportunity to properly dispose of unused, unwanted, and expired medicines, and encourages families to take the five-step American Medicine Chest Challenge.

The five steps of the challenge are:

1. Take inventory of your medicine.

2. Secure your medicine chest, which homeowners can easily do by installing a medicine cabinet with a lock.

3. Take medicine only as prescribed by your doctor.

4. Safely dispose of unused, unwanted and expired medicine.  Never pour medicine into a toilet, sink or drain.

5. Talk to your kids about the dangers of prescription drugs.

According to Jeff Bond, Senior Vice President for State Government Affairs at PhRMA, an AMCC founding sponsor, “With prescription drug abuse on the rise, it is important to have safe solutions for consumer disposal of unused medicines in their own home or through a community program in order to avoid the possibility that someone steals or misuses that medication.”

AMCC is based on the success of the nationally recognized Operation Medicine Cabinet New Jersey (OMC-NJ) that was featured in the 2010 Drug Strategy of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

AMCC is also being supported by the Partnership at DrugFree.org, Generic Pharmaceutical Association, and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association.

Kids make mistakes, but some mistakes can cost them their lives.  Keep them out of harm’s way with the few simple steps of the AMCC.  This weekend, safeguard your prescription medications and protect your family’s health and welfare.
